NPCs & Enemies - Megadusa & Medusa (2024)

Megadusa Head
Vastly empowered version of Medusa Head that also petrifies, with a cooldown on the petrification effect only, akin to Starfury.
Petrification duration increases with chargeup time; additionally, the cooldown will increase with how powerful your petrification was, to a max of 7 seconds (from minimum 3).
Megadusa Mask will hit up to 15 segments on Destroyer (On all other bosses it hits all segments), and deals extremely high damage per hit, making it Lunar tier and very useful for players wanting to use it regularly. The only reason it does not outdo Moon Lord drops, is due to its low firerate, which makes it hard to fire in a pinch, and limits its damage per second against single targets.
All numbers below will assume maximum charge.

The duration an enemy is stunned for, varies with the strength of the enemy.

This weapon can theoretically petrify any and all foes in Terraria, however this is justified by the duration of the stun, as well as the fact that this is post-megadusa tier.
Megadusa is harder to defeat than most other bosses, due to her petrification, and is only easier than the Moon Lord when the Mirror is factored in.

The weakest hardmode foes could be petrified for over 7 seconds, but the damage will kill them immediately anyway.

Megadusa's drop is one of the most powerful items in the game, save for the fact that its fire rate is lower due to charging times, and therefore does not yield the best DPS benefit to bosses with no segments. It'll still be powerful enough to one-shot most hardmode enemies at full charge, and fight bosses pretty well, but the firerate means that Moon Lord drops can potentially deal more damage over time to a single target; an example being the Last Prism, which even pierces.

Megadusa's Head is therefore extremely useful for Wave-based events, segmented bosses, and bosses that are hard to hit (due to its ability to petrify in every direction), and also for a supporting player, given its ability to petrify targets for varying durations. The petrification ability is very useful against the Twins, but not so much for the Moon Lord, given how he's already easy to hit, and he's too strong to be petrified for as long as other bosses. The damage output is still good, though.

Reflective Mirror
Upon use, the player holds up a handle, from which a mirror springs up.
This mirror will reflect Medusa and Megadusa's attacks back on them, petrifying them, giving the player time for free hits. They will also fall and take fall damage.
The Mirror will reflect in a very broad direction, meaning every enemy facing the mirror will get petrified.

Shade Goggles
Shade goggles, which can be made from black lenses, basically do what they sound; cause your entire vision to become very limited and dark, similar to the Darkness and Blackout debuffs.
However, they also protect you against Megadusa's petrification to a degree.

Like the lava charm, these have a certain cooldown; they only prevent petrification partially, meaning that it takes 7 seconds for them to cool down after a petrification.
Each successive petrification will set the coldown to 7 seconds, as well as increase the petrification penalty; a slight reduction in movement speed and firing accuracy.
The third petrification within the same timer, will the overpower shade goggles almost entirely, and a normal petrification will take place, albeit with a 10% length reduction applied.
The cooldown will also reset, so the player will not be petrified twice in a row.

For visual comparison, many FPS games feature stationary turrets that can overheat. They may also turn redder in color and stop working completely if overheated, until cooled significantly or entirely down.

Nope, the goggles decrease petrification effect on the player, causing petrification to only have a mild 10% speed decrease on player movement, and 5% on attack/firing speed.

The Shade Goggles, due to their polished surface, also have a 10% chance of returning petrification onto Megadusa, albeit at a lower power due to their dark, absorbing surface.
She will be petrified for 1-2 seconds, just about enough to almost always hit the ground from a medium height. This only works if you're within close range, which puts you at risk.
Only rely on this if you're about to get wrecked upfront anyway.
